Heading east along the Leeds and Liverpool canal

As you head into the Pennines past Pendle Hill, the location of the 17th century Pendle Witch Trials, you will see dozens of interesting sights both industrial and natural, including those listed below. For those seeking an extended trip eastwards, the Pennine ring links to the Rochdale Canal or Huddersfield Narrow Canal:

Foulridge Tunnel – Situated near the village of Colne, this mile long, straight tunnel actually took 6 years to build due to difficult rock conditions! It was made famous by a cow named Buttercup swimming through it in 1912 after falling into the canal.

Skipton – High on the hill above Skipton is one of the best-preserved examples of a Tudor castle that survives in England today. Walking through the restored banqueting halls or picturesque gardens will give visitors an insight into Tudor life in Britain. This lovely market town is also home to the Copper Dragon brewery which offers tours and tastings.

Bingley Five Rise Locks – Completed in 1774, these locks form a staircase rising 60 feet and are still considered to be an engineering masterpiece in the boating world, featuring in the 7 wonders of the waterways. At the top, stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales can be seen, making the journey more than worth the effort

Salts Mill – The village of Saltaire was built in the 1850’s by Sir Titus Salt to house workers for his cotton mill and many of the buildings remain today. The mill, which can be seen from the canalside now houses Europe’s largest collection of Bradford-born David Hockney’s works.

Leeds – As one of the up and coming cities in the north, Leeds has lots to offer visitors. From shopping in boutiques and high street stores to meandering through the city along the River Aire, Leeds will make an interesting stop on your journey. For those that enjoy history there is also the Royal Armouries on the Waterfront or a trip on the Leeds-Settle-Carlisle railway, offering sights not to be missed.
